Capital Wood Products Wins Grand Prize for Work on Whole Foods Market
Capital Wood Products has been recognized for our millwork on an award-winning project. The Association for Retail Environments (ARE) named the Lincoln Park Whole Foods Market in Chicago Grand Prize Sustainable Project of the Year. The same project was also awarded Outstanding Merit in the Supermarket/Grocery Store category. The store integrates comprehensive sustainable strategies and extensive green building practices to embody Whole Foods Market’s core value of environmental awareness. Every aspect of the store was selected to connect with Chicago’s urban environment, neighborhoods, and people, while staying true to Whole Foods Market’s commitment to green building and sustainability. The fixtures in the store use reclaimed brick, low-VOC paint, plywood with no added urea formaldehyde, and locally-sourced sustainable materials. From incorporating fly ash in the concrete to minimizing finishes, materials were selected to support environmental and health objectives. Recycled-content materials include resins, cork and tire flooring, countertops, ceiling tiles and wall tiles, while salvaged seating accents reclaimed barnwood and reclaimed local brick, leather panels, and apple crates for reuse. Other sustainable materials include bio-based composites and rapidly renewable bamboo and cork. Certified materials include:
- FSC-certified veneer for 70 percent of millwork
- Green Seal for 100 percent of laminates
- SMART and Asthma & Allergy Friendly for VCT flooring.
Signage used in the store emphasizes Whole Foods selection of local and organic foods, and a Green Mission Board in the café lists store materials, equipment, finishes, and other green building efforts. The project also features recycling stations, construction waste diversion, daylighting, a green roof, a green screen, water-efficient plumbing, and semi-permeable outdoor pavers.

Capital Woods Partners with Whole Foods on Lincoln Park Store
The third largest Whole Foods location in the world opened in Lincoln Park, Chicago on May 20, 2009. Capital Wood Products is proud to have been an integral partner in developing a host of creative, and in many cases sustainable, custom fixtures for the massive 75,000 foot store.
Among many other features, the Lincoln Park location includes seven eateries highlighting Chicago neighborhoods, self-serve coffee, trail mix and bulk bins, and a wine bar. Capital Wood Products worked closely with Whole Foods planners, architects and interior design teams to create a store that is a truly unique shopping experience.
